Golf shaft flex chart: match your swing speed to the right flex
Driver swing speed mapped to shaft flex, with the carry distance to use if you have never been measured. The letters are also not standardized, and the stock shafts in 127 current drivers show how far they drift between brands.

The bands are industry convention, not a standard. Boundaries overlap by 5–10 mph in practice, tempo moves them, and one brand's Stiff can sit in a neighbour's Regular band. See how far flex drifts by brand. Carry figures are well-struck driver carry, not total distance.

Don't know your swing speed?
Most golfers have never been measured, which makes a swing speed chart useless on its own. Three ways to get a number, in order of accuracy. The third one needs nothing but a yardage you already know.
Launch monitor
A fitting bay, a simulator or a range with a TrackMan, GCQuad or Foresight unit. Ask for club speed with the driver, averaged over ten swings, and ignore the best one. Accurate to about 1 mph.
Personal radar or sensor
Pocket radar units and grip-mounted sensors read within 2–3 mph of a launch monitor. Camera-only phone apps are less reliable; treat their number as a range, not a reading.
Carry distance proxy
Well-struck driver carry divided by roughly 2.5 gives club speed. A 220-yard carry is about 88 mph; 240 is about 96. The second column of the chart above does this for you.
A 7-iron carry of about 140 yards corresponds to roughly 75 mph with that club and 90–95 mph with the driver, which puts you at the top of the Regular band. Every club's average carry is on the golf club distance chart; find your 7-iron number there and read the third column of the flex chart.
Flex is not standardized
No governing body defines what Stiff means. Each manufacturer sets its own scale, so the same letter covers a wide range of real stiffness, and the tier below Regular does not even share a name. In the StickPicker database, 63 current drivers call that tier Senior or A, 24 call it Lite, and Honma ships an SR that is stiffer than Regular, not softer. Project X stock shafts skip letters entirely and print 5.5, 6.0 and 6.5.
Shaft builders measure stiffness as frequency, in cycles per minute, and published frequencies for shafts labelled Stiff can differ by more than a full conventional flex step between brands. Brands with a single current driver are omitted. Cobra sells no Senior flex at all: its light-swing option is a Lite build of the stock shaft. Ping offers both, a Soft Regular on the Alta CB (recorded here as Senior) and a Lite build of the Alta Quick. Honma's SR sits between R and S. Where a brand offers Project X stock shafts, the 5.5 / 6.0 / 6.5 numbers map roughly to R / S / X.
The letter changes less than the weight does
A Senior or Lite driver ships a 35–50 g shaft; a low-spin model built for fast swings ships 50–75 g. When a chart says "go one flex softer", most of what changes on the rack is 10–20 g of weight and a softer tip, which is why two brands' Regulars can feel a full flex apart.
Weight, torque and kick point, briefly
Three other numbers on a shaft spec sheet. Flex matters most; these explain why two shafts with the same letter feel different, and they are the reason a fitter will ask about your tempo before your speed.
Weight
Heavier shafts add control and lower launch; lighter shafts add speed. Faster tempos and stronger players usually prefer heavier. This is the number that moves most between the Lite and Stiff versions of the same driver.
Torque
How much the shaft twists under load. Low torque feels firm and stable and suits fast, aggressive transitions; higher torque feels smoother and helps slower swings square the face.
Kick point
Where along the shaft it bends most. A low kick point launches higher with more spin; a high kick point launches lower. The effect is small next to loft, which is the first thing to change if launch is wrong.
Iron shafts vs driver shafts
The main chart is for the driver. Irons are shorter and heavier, so you swing every one of them slower: a 7-iron runs at about 80–85% of driver speed. Do not feed a 7-iron number into a driver chart, or the other way round.
Iron flex is set from 6-iron or 7-iron speed. Most golfers land in the same letter for both, but fitters often go one step softer in irons for feel, or one step firmer for players who hit down hard and de-loft the club.
Steel or graphite. Steel is heavier, cheaper and more consistent, and stays the default for anyone over about 85 mph with the driver. Graphite suits slower swings, sore joints and anyone whose iron shaft should weigh under 90 g. Of the 178 current iron sets in the database, 146 list a graphite stock option, 126 list steel, and 113 offer both from the factory.

Driver equivalent assumes the usual 80–85% ratio. Steel iron shafts also come in weight classes (95, 105, 120, 130 g) that matter as much as the letter; a 95 g Regular and a 130 g Regular are not the same club.
What happens if your flex is wrong
Wrong flex shows up as a pattern, not a single bad shot. Look for the miss you keep hitting on good swings, then check it against the two columns. One symptom alone proves little; a low push can also be a setup fault. Two or three together on well-struck shots is a flex signal.
If you sit on a boundary in the chart, tempo decides it: a smooth, long swing leans softer, a quick transition leans stiffer, at the same speed.

For seniors and anyone under about 85 mph, the shortlist is the drivers that ship a Senior or Lite flex on a stock shaft of 45 g or less: 30 current men's or unisex models. The first 12 are the HL, Lite, Max Fast and MAX-D versions of their families, built with a lighter head and more loft for exactly this golfer; the rest are standard or low-spin heads that happen to offer a light build. Pair the light shaft with 10.5° to 12° of loft.

Published frequencies for shafts labelled Stiff can differ by more than a full flex step between brands. Compare weight and profile, or get fitted, rather than trusting the letter.
Can I use this chart for my irons?
Not with driver speed. A 7-iron swings at about 80–85% of driver speed, so use the iron table on this page: Regular at 70–80 mph with a 7-iron, Stiff at 80–90. Most golfers end up in the same letter for irons and driver, but it should be checked separately, and iron shaft weight matters as much as flex.
