How to measure your own distances
The chart is a baseline. Three things decide whether your own numbers land near it.
Carry vs total
Carry is where the ball lands. Total adds roll, which is 5–8% on a firm fairway and close to zero into a soft green. Gap your bag on carry; play the course on total.
Range vs course
Range balls fly 5–10 yards shorter than a premium ball, and range flags are routinely mis-marked. Take your tee-shot number from the course, not the mat.
Launch monitor or app
Hit ten good strikes per club, drop the two outliers and average the rest. A GPS app's shot tracking over five rounds gives the same answer for free.
A 7-iron is not a 7-iron
The number on the sole is a name, not a loft. Across the 164 current iron sets (2024–2026) in the StickPicker database, 7-iron loft runs from 27° to 35°. That 8° spread is roughly two and a half clubs of distance.

Your gaps at average

How far should I hit each club?
For an average male golfer: driver 215 yards carry, 7-iron 142, pitching wedge 112. Women average about 77% of those numbers. Set the filters above to your swing speed and skill level and the table gives your full set.
What is the average driver distance?
Men average around 215 yards of carry and 234 total. Beginners land near 168 carry, low handicappers around 245, and tour players carry roughly 282. Swing speed explains most of the difference: about 2.5 yards of carry per mph of driver speed.
How far does a 7-iron go?
About 142 yards of carry for an average male golfer with a 30° 7-iron, and around 109 for an average woman. A 27° distance iron adds roughly 7 to 10 yards; a 34° players' iron takes about the same away.
How much distance do you lose with age?
Driver swing speed drops around 1 mph a year after 50, which works out to roughly 5% of carry per decade. A golfer who carried the driver 240 yards at 35 usually carries it 210 to 215 at 60.
