Golf grip size chart: find your size by hand measurement

Measure from the crease of your wrist to the tip of your middle finger, then read across. Most men land on standard or midsize. Below the chart are a calculator, how to measure, and what midsize actually means at Golf Pride, Winn, SuperStroke and Lamkin, because it is not the same size at each.

Step 1

How to measure your hand for grip size

Two checks, two minutes. Use a tape measure first, then confirm with a club in your hand. Measure your top hand: the left hand for a right-handed golfer.

Method 1: wrist to fingertip

Measuring a hand for golf grip size: from the first wrist crease to the tip of the middle fingerwrist crease8½″
  1. Hold your top hand flat, palm up.
  2. Measure from the first crease of your wrist to the tip of your middle finger.
  3. Round to the nearest ⅛″ and read it against the chart above.

Method 2: the fingertip check

Take your normal grip on a club and look at where the middle and ring fingers of your top hand land against the palm.

Right sizeTips just touch the pad
Too bigA visible gap remains

If the tape measure and the fingertip check disagree, trust the check. Long fingers on a short palm can fool the ruler.

Step 2

Golf grip size calculator

Enter your hand length, your glove size, or both, and add the fingertip check if you have a club handy. You get a size and, near a boundary, how many extra wraps of tape to add.

An 8¼″ hand is in the upper part of the standard range. A standard grip with two extra wraps of tape splits the difference before you commit to midsize.

Not standardized

Golf grip sizes by brand: midsize is not one size

Golf Pride, Winn, SuperStroke and Lamkin each publish their own size chart, so nobody puts them side by side. Here they are, from each brand's own spec listings.

How much larger than standard, in 64ths of an inch

MidsizeJumbo / oversize

A SuperStroke Traxion Tour midsize is 1/64″ over standard. A Winn Dri-Tac midsize is 1/16″ over, four times as much. Switch brands and keep ordering midsize, and you can end up a full size away from what you had.

SuperStroke Traxion Tour.600″OfferedBase+1/64″+1/32″
Lamkin Crossline.580″—50 g62 g76 g

Golf Pride midsize and jumbo increments are derived from Golf Pride's rule that four extra wraps move a grip up one size; the other figures are as listed by the brand or its retailers. Lamkin lists core size and weight but no diameter increment. Checked Oct 2026.

Check the core size too. Most current shafts have a .600″ butt. A grip with a .580″ core, like every size of the Lamkin Crossline, stretches over that shaft and installs about one to two wraps larger than its label says.

Check the weight. A Golf Pride Tour Wrap 2G jumbo is 25 g heavier than the standard. That much weight at the butt lowers swingweight by a few points, so the head feels lighter. Winn's polymer Dri-Tac barely changes weight from standard to oversize.

Diagnosis

What happens if your grip is the wrong size

Shown for a right-handed golfer; left-handers flip the directions. One symptom alone usually points at the swing rather than the grip. Two or three together, plus a failed fingertip check, point at size.

Grip too small

Ball flightPulls and hooks; the face closes early through impact
HandsSqueezing hard to feel the club, too much wrist action
Glove wearHoles worn at the fingertips
BodyForearm tension and tired hands late in a round

Grip too large

Ball flightPushes and fades to the right; the face stays open
HandsA gap between fingers and palm, the wrists cannot release
FeelThe club feels dead and shots come up short
Glove wearWorn at the heel pad of the palm

Adjusting grip size with tape

Falling between two sizes is common. Extra layers of tape under the grip close the gap without changing grip model.

How much each extra wrap of grip tape adds to grip diameter
Extra wrapsAddsFeels like
+11/64″A touch fuller
+21/32″Half a size
+33/64″Most of a size
+41/16″One full size up

Before you add tape

  • Every grip already sits on one layer of double-sided tape. “+2” means two layers on top of that base layer.
  • Golf Pride's own rule: four extra layers move a grip up one full size.
  • Built-up grips feel firmer because the rubber is stretched over a wider core.
  • Tape keeps the original taper. A true midsize is shaped differently and is often fuller under the lower hand.
  • If only your lower hand feels cramped, add the extra layers under the lower half of the grip only.
Different rules

Putter grips are sized differently

Swing grips are sized to your hand. Putter grips are sized to your stroke. A thicker putter grip fills the hands and quiets the small wrist break that sends short putts offline, which is why oversize, no-taper putter grips are common on tour.

SuperStroke labels its putter grips by a diameter number rather than standard or midsize. Choose by feel: if your wrists get active on short putts, start one size thicker than your swing grips. Browse current putters and their stock grips.

What size golf grip do I need?

Measure from the crease of your wrist to the tip of your middle finger. Under 7 inches is undersize, 7 to 8¾ inches is standard, 8¾ to 9¼ inches is midsize, and over 9¼ inches is jumbo. Confirm it by gripping a club: your fingertips should just touch the pad of your palm.

What is the difference between standard and midsize golf grips?

A midsize grip is usually about 1/16 inch thicker than a standard grip, roughly the same as four extra wraps of tape. That varies by brand: a SuperStroke Traxion Tour midsize is only 1/64 inch larger than its standard.

Does glove size tell me my grip size?

It is a reasonable starting point. A men's medium usually fits a standard grip, a large usually fits midsize, and XL or larger fits jumbo. Finger length varies at the same glove size, so confirm with the fingertip check.

How much does one wrap of tape add to a golf grip?

About 1/64 inch to the grip's diameter. Four extra wraps take a grip up roughly one full size, which is Golf Pride's own rule of thumb.

Is a Golf Pride midsize the same as other brands' midsize?

No. There is no industry standard. Golf Pride and Winn midsize grips are about 1/16 inch over standard, SuperStroke's Traxion Tour midsize is 1/64 inch over, and Lamkin does not publish an increment. Compare the size increase, not the label.

Should every club in my bag have the same grip size?

Your swing clubs, driver through wedges, usually should, so your hands feel the same on every full shot. Putters are the exception and are sized to your stroke rather than your hand.
