One more head than the 939X and a change of construction: the 949X hybrid is multi-material rather than cast, running 18, 21, 24 and 27 degrees behind a 455 Carpenter steel face, which is the more consequential of the two changes.

Shafts are specified at order rather than pulled from a rack, chosen from Sub 70's no-upcharge list in any flex from ladies to X-stiff. Both adjustments carry over. That 27 degree head is what changes the character of the family, pushing it past the long irons and into the space a 6-iron usually occupies, and having it built to the same specification as the 18 keeps the whole run consistent from top to bottom.
